Cereals’n’Java

Hello, world! I’ve been quite busy working here in England at a 14/6 pace and just didn’t find the time for blogging… Ok, that sounds worse than it actually is:

  • I’m coding together with my cousin Booka which is always fun
  • The project is really interesting and challenging
  • I finally get to use Java and not just study it in theory
  • We go climbing every now and then
  • We live in this fancy palace-like house
  • Everything’s taken care of: cooking, laundry, shopping, etc.

To be honest, it’s really cool here. I like working together with Bookie in this environment where everything’s tuned for maximum efficiency and creativity at the same time. The only problem is: We have three four-hour slots of work per day which drives your feeling of time totally bananas. At the end of one day, events from the very same day’s morning feel like as if they’ve happened two or three days in the past because one’s usually not adjusted to three half work days per day 🙂

But because it’s the Booka and he’s the biggest climbing-nerd I know, we often go bouldering or climbing and it’s awesome! Finally, I get to train that crap properly 😀 My very personal problem is: I’m too heavy for my forearms! Damn, gotta slim…

London – A first summary

Hey! I’ve been here for a few days already and still no post? Sorry ’bout that, but I’ve just been busy coding with Booka! 😉 And even though this post and the one mentioning my flight here are called something with “London” I am not in London, actually… The house we’re living in is in a relatively small village near Sutton and it’s a blast! Huge rooms, too many bathrooms, extremely quiet etc. so we really can focus on the programming we’re supposed to do here.

Today finally, we had some free time and Booka, Wolle and me could stroll around in London, take some pictures and have a good time, of course :mrgreen: We rode the train to Victoria station (yeah, that’s the one that’s to be seen in almost every Harry Potter movie as “King’s Cross” because Mrs. Rowling mistook it for the latter, by the way) and took a walk from there. We passed by Buckingham Palace where by coincidence some ceremony was going on and we were forced to wait until it’s over 😉 After that, we crossed Green Park and finally arrived at Picadilly Circus. Haaah, finally. I’ve been here before and even though it’s like one of the no. 1 tourist-spots in the city, it’s actually quite lame and cool at the same time 😀 It feels like a tiny version of the Shibuya crossing, doesn’t it? Anyways, we had lunch and continued our trip in the direction to Trafalgar square and Chinatown and finally headed down to the Thames where we “met” Downing Street, Big Ben and The Eye.

After that we entered The Tube at Waterloo station and went to Tottenham Court Road where we took a long walk down Oxford Street, had some Starbuck’s coffee (which sucked, by the way) and went back to Leicester Square to have dinner. Eventually, Miri joined us and after having drinks at a nice bar, we finally cruised back home. And London traffic is hell – seriously. 9:30 p.m. and all roads are still packed with cars? Seriously folks, where do you all wanna go? Why don’t you ride your beloved Tube? :mrgreen:

Update: I just had to step up to that DDR machine… Just like the good ol’ times with my English class from school when we were in London back then! 😀

Preparing for London

Whew! Only one week until I’ll go to the airport and fly to London to join Booka for a testing week at his artificial intelligence project in London. I promised myself to start packing early enough but I just know it’s not going to happen until Sunday night or (way more likely) Monday morning 😉

I’ve also attended the HoKo at my old university last week and now have plenty of contacts to dig through in order to find possible employers. I just hope I made a good impression at the fair and that there are going to be some opportunities for cool jobs in Munich. And again: Keep your fingers crossed :mrgreen:

Jeah, right… Japanese course’s over but there’s still not more sleep in for me. Why, do you ask? Well, I might have mentioned that I was so looking forward to a very relaxed last semester with only a few exams, lots of contemplating about my thesis outside in the sunshine etc. So much for that! Ever since I got out of the language course I’ve been spending almost 100% of my time in the robotics lab…

Yep, the tries-to-get-into-the-robotics-world-championships-robot project. It’s great fun, it’s kinda cool, it’s really interesting and challenging but due to the closing in deadline it’s eating up hundreds of hours of developing, coding, testing, debugging etc. Is there someone out there who can teach me how to give that little bastard a bit of intelligence so it does the work on it’s own so I finally get to do some things I haven’t done in a while (e.g. sleeping, eating, doing sports etc.)? 😀

Japanese intensive course – or yet another era of sleepless nights

Booya! Having started from March 23rd, I’m currently attending a very good (and intensive) Japanese language course which takes place 9 hours a day, 6 days a week until this Saturday. Adding to that, I’ve also started implementing parts of the A.I. of a robot that’s supposed to go to the EuroBot 2009! As cool as all that stuff is, my daily sleep quota dropped to a new record-low around 3.5 hours a day… When I’m not in the classroom,in the robo-lab, in the gym or out running, I’m sitting at my desk spending hours and hours studying, repeating, preparing. *sigh* Well, at least the language course totally rocks 😀

But I’ll be celebrating and sleeping (finally) when it’s over 😉

Das ist ein echtes Japanisches Wort, welches aus dem Deutschen entnommen wurde. In Romaji übersetzt heißt es “Arubaito”, also Arbeit. Ja genau, der eigentliche Grund meines Japanaufenthalts hat angefangen! Darum war ich diese Woche auch mit Fotos und Beiträgen eher sparsam… Anyways, jetzt bin ich ja wieder da.  Die Kenner unter Euch werden hoffentlich schon mein cooles Panoramabild bemerkt haben, das oben im Header zu bewundern ist. Erstaunlich, was man aus schlechten Fotos zusammenschneiden kann und wie gut man aus einem farbschwachen (diesiger Tag und mittelmässige Kamera) Foto etwas Lebendiges zaubern kann – gimp sei dank! Okay, schon klar, so toll sieht es auch wieder nicht aus, aber ich bin halt stolz auf meine Arbeit 😛 Also, kommen wir zum Thema: die Liebe Arbeit. Am Montag bin ich also in den Zug gestiegen, um von 中井 mit der 西武新宿戦 über 高田馬場 mit der 山手線 nach 五反田 zu fahren. Klar soweit? In Gotanda angekommen, spazierte ich etwa 10 Minuten zum Takanawa Park Tower building, auf dem auch in dicken Lettern Siemens geschrieben steht (Fotos folgen, wenn ich mal dran denk’ meine Kamera mitzunehmen). Rauf in den 20. Stock, die geile Aussicht kurz bewundert weil ich zu früh war, und schon gings los mit Vorstellung, Begrüßung, viel zu vielen neuen Namen, Verbeugungen, noch mehr Namen, Händeschütteln (wow!), und schwupps hatte ich ein Notebook in der Hand und mir wurde ein Schreibtisch mit Dockingstation zugeteilt. Jedenfalls muss ich sagen, dass meine Kollegen alle durch die Bank super nett sind, der Arbeitsplatz sehr schön und cool ist (trotz Großraumbüro), man sowohl den Tokyo Tower als auch den Mt. Fujiyama von meinem Büro aus sehen kann und ich gleich von Anfang an an sehr interessanten Projekten mitarbeiten darf/soll. Nur ein paar der Inhalte:

  • E-Mail-Verschlüsselung mit Native S/MIME und entsprechende Umstellung der CAT-Clients von ca. 1700 Anwendern in ganz Japan
  • Erzeugung eines Installationspaketes für Festplattenkryptographie, mit dem auch der dümmste User (genannte ca. 1700 Stück) es schafft, seine Platte zu verschlüsseln und dennoch weiter zu arbeiten
  • Umstellung diverser Serversysteme auf neue Standards
  • Datenbankwartungsarbeiten
  • Etwas fortgeschrittene Batchprogrammierung (örks)
  • Visual Basic (noch mehr örks)
  • …

Was dabei sehr geil ist, dass die ganzen Projekte, an denen ich mitarbeiten werde, doch schon recht viel Verantwortung innehaben und die mich dennoch gleich voll mit reden lassen und sogar gezielt nach meiner Meinung fragen (ich bin nicht “der doofe Praktikant”). Also man könnte sagen, dass mir die erste Woche da sehr gut geschmeckt hat und ich schon ganz gespannt bin, wie das weiter geht. Auch meine Japanisch-Kenntnisse wachsen (langsam, aber immerhin) und ich traue mich schon an die ersten paar Kanji-Zeichen ran – halt die, die ich von den Bahnstationen kenne ^^. Stay tuned! 

Zurück in den Alltag

Tja, nachdem schon Marc in den Alltag zurückgekehrt ist, muss ich das auch mal machen… Immerhin winken mir jetzt schon die Prüfungen zu, die ich Ende Januar schreiben werde. Nachdem ich die letzten 5 Stunden über einem Praktikumsversuch C++ gebrütet habe, habe ich gerade entscheiden, dass jetzt ein kleiner Break her muss und ich meinen Blog mal wieder füttern sollte. Bei dieser Gelegenheit teste ich gleich mal das schicke highlight.js Teil:

Die Feiertage waren sehr entspannt, gefräßig und gemütlich – eben genau das, was man sich unter der staaden Zeit vorstellt! Ein paar Fotos von Weihnachten und den Tagen drum herum gibt’s ja hier auch in der Gallerie zu sehen…Aber jetzt schlägt das neue Jahr mit voller Härte zu und ich stelle fest, dass ich definitiv noch nicht genug getan habe dieses Semester (was’n Witz eigentlich) und darum steig’ ich schon wieder in andere Sphären auf: C++, VHDL, C, PHP, MySQL, usw… Ansonsten gilt für mich – wie eigentlich immer – mal wieder das Motto: Same shit, different day: Lernen, Ackern, Büffeln, kein Schlaf, zu wenig Sport ^^ In jedem Fall wünsche ich Allen treuen Lesern (und Leserinnen, man(n) sollte ja das Gendering niemals misachten!) einen guten Start in das neue Jahr und viel Spaß und Erfolg!

… denn ich bin zur Zeit ziemlich übel mit Studium usw. eingeschneit. Zwischendurch bastel’ ich aber immer mal wieder am neuen Theme, versprochen 😉

Tja, das liebe leidige Thema Zeit: nie hat man genug davon! Erst gestern Nacht (besser: heute Morgen) habe ich mal wieder bewiesen, dass ich noch kein Geek bin, wenn ich mir mehrere Nächte meine Tastatur um die Ohren hau, sondern einfach nur Student der Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik… Wenn ich dann doch tatsächlich irgendwann ins Bett komme, schwirren mir nur Peripheral Event Controller, General Purpose Timer, ASCs, 10-Bit-AD-Wandler und anderer Blödsinn im Kopf rum. Von C++ habe ich dabei noch garnicht angefangen, weil ich mich einfach kategorisch geweigert habe, blöde Klassendiagramme und UML-Skizzen zu malen 😉

UPDATE Übrigens: das Theme ist da. Kommentarfunktion und so weiter noch nicht zu 100% zu meiner Zufriedenheit (CSS muss noch angepasst werden usw), aber wenigstens das Wichtigste sollte gehen…
