I’m not a PHD
I love holidays
Alright… I’m starting to become a serious case of a workaholic because after more than six weeks, I still think that MY. JOB. ROCKS. and I’m like totally devoting myself to it by means of having almost no private life anymore, doing waaaay to few sports etc. But still, it’s the small things about holidays that I love: Staying up until 4 re-watching Scrubs season 1 , getting up around 10:30, finally go running for an hour or so in the sunshine without having had breakfast (yeah you heard right, my stupid belly: the tummy’s gotta go!) and doing so enjoying Munich’s habit of looking incredibly beautiful when it’s getting spring, finally. On top of the “mountain” in the olympic park, I took a few seconds to breathe (had to, otherwise I’d might have passed out π ) and looked around: AWE-to-the-SOME! One could see to roughly a trillion kilometers distance! Sheesh, I love holidays for giving me moments like that.
Winter mayhem, Code, Climbing, Solitude
Whoa, time flies when you’re busy, right? I am quite busy, actually π
So what has happened since my last post? Ah right, a new year started! Unfortunately, I could not attend the cool party I was invited to due to feeling sick for three days… But fortunately, I was invited to another party at my hometown so I decided to fill myself up with Aspirin and go there to meet lots of friends – of whom I’ve known some for almost 18 years already – at 11 p.m.
The following days were very calm and peaceful: Just stayed at home, had great food and slept a lot. That’s always a good thing to do when you have the chance to! But on January 5th, I finally emerged from my laziness and hopped over to England where I rejoined the coding team of Booka. Ever since then, I barely left the house because I basically do nothing but working here π
England… It’s so funny! We got a little bit of snow here and the whole country descends into pure mayhem… Seriously – in many parts of Germany these amounts of snow are just normal and the same procedure as every year! But because the snow clearing services are not that good (or, seem not to be existing) here, it takes days or even weeks until several roads are clear again. Combined with the fact that snow tires are almost unknown here… Well, you can imagine what’s going on! π All airports face severe problems, too!Β So I can call myself lucky that I came home on December 24th without bigger delays… But the view I get to see is great:
Alright, back to my topic-checklist: climbing! Yes, climbing! Even though my skin has not yet recovered from my first attempts in December, I couldn’t resist going bouldering together with the other guys π and now my hands are wrecked again… But it’s fun and I’ll just continue until my skin turns into leather
Next topic? Ah yes, solitude. Solitude? You ask? Well, it seems we’re having some kind of epidemic here: Adrian’s sick, Booka’s sick, Miri doesn’t feel so well… So therefore I’m sitting at my desk all alone π
“It doesn’t have to be fun to be fun”
Climbing starts to be a lot of fun … and quite painful if your skin isn’t as rough as you think it should be and your arms still have power to go on bouldering. So kids, here’s a question: What happens when you continue climbing at your limit (which, in my case, is not really that advanced…) even though you got blisters on almost all fingers? Right! It hurts! π But never mind, what did we buy lots of tape for?
Cereals’n’Java
Hello, world! I’ve been quite busy working here in England at a 14/6 pace and just didn’t find the time for blogging… Ok, that sounds worse than it actually is:
- I’m coding together with my cousin Booka which is always fun
- The project is really interesting and challenging
- I finally get to use Java and not just study it in theory
- We go climbing every now and then
- We live in this fancy palace-like house
- Everything’s taken care of: cooking, laundry, shopping, etc.
To be honest, it’s really cool here. I like working together with Bookie in this environment where everything’s tuned for maximum efficiency and creativity at the same time. The only problem is: We have three four-hour slots of work per day which drives your feeling of time totally bananas. At the end of one day, events from the very same day’s morning feel like as if they’ve happened two or three days in the past because one’s usually not adjusted to three half work days per day π
But because it’s the Booka and he’s the biggest climbing-nerd I know, we often go bouldering or climbing and it’s awesome! Finally, I get to train that crap properly π My very personal problem is: I’m too heavy for my forearms! Damn, gotta slim…
Alright, gotta start working. Here are two random pics:
Back to Germany (for a while), hiking and relaxing
After having come back to Germany (and having dealt with the enormous jet-lag bwahahaa), I had to experience how awesome the Munich airport is and how not-at-all awesome its connection to the city is! From the moment the plane touched the runway in Munich until the moment I stepped out of the security area (including baggage retrieval by the way) it took less than 20 minutes! But to travel from the airport to Heufeld (distance: approx. 80 km) where I was picked up by my mom, it took more than 2 hours…
Anyways, my mom and me went hiking today! And it was legen… (wait for it) …dary! We ran up to the peak of the Breitenstein and ate 850 meters of height in just 90 minutes – lovely! Sunny weather, maybe the very last warm day this year. Having returned home, my first action was to start the sauna π But even if this day has been so beautiful (or maybe because of that!?), I can’t wait for spring to come.
Half-Marathon: BΓ€derlauf
Today, my mom and me participated in a half-marathon from Bad Aibling to Bad Feilnbach. I’m not fully pleased with my time of 2:19:49 (and with the fact that my mom was 8 minutes faster π ) but I’m really happy that I did it π
The track lead us through the mindboggingly beutiful landscape and the weather was really nice – maybe a little bit too warm at the beginning. It’s also featured in GoogleMaps. If I’m still in Germany next year, I’ll participate again, promise π
What a weekend this has been…
Wow, what a weekend! On Friday afternoon, a friend from Tokyo, Tomoko, arrived from Frankfurt where she was visiting a friend. To represent Bavaria and its hospitality, I took up the challenge of being her host and tour guide for the time she was staying here π We started off with some delicious food at the Paulaner im Tal and some cocktails at the nearby Sausalitos bar.
After that we just returned to my place and called it a day. On Saturday morning I got up and did some jogging with Andi – who had nothing better to do but to strain his ankle… Awesome, now we can’t go to the gym because his thumb’s messed up and we can’t go running because of his foot! π I’m gonna gain weight if his streak of injuries continues like this…
At the time I got back to my appartment, Tomoko was finally awake π and we buzzed off to Schluss Nymphenburg. It’s one of the biggest royal palaces in Europe and features a huge park and impressive alleys from the outside. I’ve never seen the inside, actually and Tomoko wanted to take a look at the gallery of beauties in the museum. I’m usually not so much into old-fashioned architecture or arts but this was really impressive! Magnificent architecture, light everywhere and the original baroque stucco definitely are some things to remember.
After spending some time at the castle, we returned to the inner city where we took a walk around town. We then met Marcus at the Odeonsplatz, where the rehearsal for the open air classic concert was going on – pretty cool atmosphere there! Oh and San Francisco Coffee Company: Thanks for the great coffee π (damn I should get paid for doing commercials like this…)
From the Odeonsplatz we went on to the Marienplatz in order to take a look at the new town hall of Munich and to climb up to the observation deck of the Alter Peter church tower. The view from there is just awesome – one can see most of the city and even into the mountains (on clear days, of course). Before we got there, we had a nice random encounter for which the chances might be even tinier than winning the lottery – let’s just say that maybe I got a first foot in the door at finding a job in Tokyo… Anyways, here are some pictures:
Oh and I completely forgot to mention that I was wondering the whole day what’s going on in the city because many people were there and a slight sensation of party was in the air – it happened to be Christopher Street Day! When we arrived at the Marienplatz, we finally found out about that π Eventually we were really tired from walking and decided to spend the rest of the afternoon in the Englischer Garten, Munich’s biggest park area.
Having returned to my place for a shower and a few minutes of rest, we rushed out again to Hieu’s farewell party. He’s departing for his new job in Tokyo today and I ENVY HIM SO MUCH for that π Unfortunately, my cam ran out of battery then and so I did not take any pictures there… In the end, it was a great party and I wish Hieu all the best for his future and hope I can team up with him in Tokyo soon – this is going to be legendary π
Munich city run / 10km
On Sunday I participated in the Munich city run and did the 10 kilometers in 55:50 – not the best time, actually, but I’m still a beginner π
Anyways, the run was great, the event was well-planned and everything went smoothly. Even the weather was gracious enough to stop raining for a while π The only thing that sucked is that the photo service they arranged (with those funny-looking badges near the runners throats) is only giving out low-res pictures or (paid) photo-prints…
